Penn State School of Visual Arts to Host Second Annual Summer Art Camp

SoVA 2013 Art Camp

The Penn State School of Visual Arts (SoVA) announces its second annual summer art camp for high school visual arts students. The workshop will take place July 13-19, 2014, on Penn State’s University Park campus. The residential art camp offers an intensive studio program across various art media and is open to students entering grades 9 through 12. The theme for the 2014 SoVA summer art camp is Portfolio Processes. The aim is to improve young artists’ creative capacities in a range of media and processes through the development of an art portfolio. Most college art schools require the submission of an art portfolio to gain acceptance into degree programs. Campers will complete a series of workshops in drawing, photography, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture using a range of traditional and digital media. Studio workshops are taught by experienced graduate art students and faculty. Campers will also participate in film nights and social activities within the school.

Campers participating in the Portfolio Processes workshops will expand their creative capacities in a range of art-making processes and be able to professionally showcase their art and design by digitally documenting artworks in process. “An art portfolio is a window into one’s artistic identity because the images and ideas are an indication of how an artist thinks and makes decisions, uses materials to solve problems, and demonstrates where the imagination can take us,” said Graeme Sullivan, director of the Penn State School of Visual Arts.  “Last year’s camp was a special experience, with a very talented group of young artists; SoVA is very much looking forward to seeing what this year’s camp brings.”

SoVA’s Edwin W. Zoller Gallery will serve as a studio for campers to display and critique their work. On the last day of camp, campers will host an exhibition that will showcase their creative talent.

The Penn State School of Visual Arts (SoVA) is a part of the College of Arts and Architecture, located on Penn State’s University Park Campus.  SoVA offers degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in three areas of study, including Art Education, Studio Art, and Interdisciplinary Digital Studio.  The nationally and internationally recognized faculty is dedicated to the learning, research, and educational imagination that take place in the studios and classrooms at SoVA.
