Bachelor of Science in Art Education Degree
Museums and Cultural Institutions Option

The museums and cultural institutions option prepares undergraduate art education students to assume a variety of art teaching and service occupations in social and cultural settings outside the public and private schools. This option requires a semester-long intern experience to be conducted in settings such as art and art-related museums, community arts centers, hospitals, prisons, recreation centers, government agencies, mental health centers, and centers for youth and the elderly.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the art education major may enter careers other than teaching. Opportunities exist with art journals, government agencies, suppliers of art materials, art galleries, and art centers. Other job options may be available with art foundations, museum services, firms that develop art teaching materials, and in various cultural services.

Specific Requirements

The art education program includes large concentrations of courses in general requirements, art studio and art history courses, and professional courses in art education. A minimum of 120 credits is required for the bachelor of science in art education for museums and cultural institutions option.

Although art education majors need not become exhibiting artists, they take courses with art majors and must be able to successfully compete with them. Students in the museums and cultural institutions option are encouraged to use elective credits to develop a specialization in one area of art study.

In the art education for museums and cultural institutions option, the student has a fourteen-week internship with an agency to assist in or give art instruction, work with the agency’s publications, and/or contribute to the organization’s program as an art specialist.
