WADDELL BIGGART GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP

The Graduate School offers fellowships each year to advanced graduate students in memory of the late Waddell A. Biggart II.

Purpose and eligibility: 

The purpose of this fellowship is to recognize and provide financial assistance to outstanding graduate students in the arts and humanities at Penn State. Eligible to apply are graduate students approaching the end of their degree programs: master's students in their final year of master's programs and doctoral students who have passed their comprehensive examinations and have an approved dissertation topic at the time of application.

The Waddell Biggart Graduate Fellowships will only fund requests directly related to dissertations, theses, monographs, final exhibitions, recitals, and other final projects. Fellowships will not be awarded for study, performance, or work not directly related to graduate degree requirements Grants will be awarded to selected graduate students to provide financial assistance that will hasten the completion of a dissertation, thesis, or final project. In order to access fellowship funds from the Bursar’s office, Waddell Biggart Fellows must be registered for at least 9 credits during the semester(s) when they will receive these funds. The maximum amount awarded per grant is $2,000.

Half of the total funds available will be awarded to graduate students in terminal master’s degrees and half to doctoral students.

The following items are examples of the kinds of requests that may be made for Waddell Biggart Graduate Fellowships: Travel, lodging, and per diem to conduct research on the dissertation, thesis, or final project

Purchase of supplies and/or services for creating, exhibiting, or performing final projects (e.g., paint, metal, matting, framing, payment of accompanists for graduate recitals)

Reproduction of materials needed to complete the dissertation, thesis, or final project, etc.

 

The following items will not be funded:

Audio/visual and computer hardware

Promotional materials or publicity for art exhibitions and performances

 

Application materials: Nine copies of the following materials must be submitted to the graduate officer in your department or school (contact school for deadline each April)

1. Letter of support from the applicant's graduate advisor or major professor for the applicant's degree

2. Proposal (one to three pages) stating the purpose of the request for the timely completion of degree requirements (the three pages may include visual materials)

3. Itemized budget (on a separate sheet)

4. Curriculum vitae

 

All applicants are encouraged to consult with the graduate officer in their respective units before the deadline for submission of proposals about the project itself, the budget, and the writing of the proposal.
