Art and Aesthetics Criticism- practice of applying critical thinking describing the qualities of a work including its historical context. Center-the established power structures in the Western European Modern art traditon, the patriarchical society Connotation-intension of and ideas put into imagery-that which hopes to express or sell or influence Contemporary- now Contextualized- meaning that becomes attributed to a specific word or statement because of the ideas that surround it Critical thinking- looking at the context, appearances and historical positions of works. Developing meaning of works by observing structure, historical position and stylistic details of works. Denotation-that which is actually taught or shown or said by the imagery Gaze-the filter or way material culture and art are looked at coming from the attitude and approach tought or sought. The gaze of western European males of the Remaissance has established the way we look at artistic production in the Western European Art tradition. Goals-personal vision for self and for one's place in the culture. A motivating force.We teach,learn and are influenced by. Identity-ones' self image built in pursuit of goals and developed inrelationship to other individual images in the culture Intertextual- that which can be inferred but is not directly stated by the understanding of meanings of things around it.

Margin-referring to those opperating at the edges of the White, European ethnocentered culture Modern-era beginning with the late 1800s where the individual artistic genius making their own statements against the cannon of Western European Art history flourished. A step along the way from the limited range of Western Art making practices of the Reniassance beginning with Leonardo as the first artist working in a modern approach and ending with the explosion of art practices and venues that came with the political and social openness of the 1960s. Other-anyone in a marginal group:any cultural group not directly and only influenced by mainstream White Western European group Post Modern-an era and attitude of art making coming out of the 1960's where established traditions of work made for galleries in relation to previous modern art and western european traditions was questioned. Included work of a much more individual and personal nature with reference to rules and beliefs set up by the artist. Post-Post-Modern- Concerns of the post modern and modern are history and idea of artist much more important than any particular media or product tradition Semiotics-study of signs, the signifier and the signified Stereotypes-ways of looking at people or groups with blanket judgements that may or may not be true: usually negative and keeps viewer from looking carefully at the truth of ones' being rather than being part of a stereotyped group Visual culture-study of visual and written materials that affect our everyday lives and perceptions profoundly
