Visual Culture Workshop

This program looks at the reasons for visual culture studies being integrated into our current curriculm and activities.

Reasons for it---Greater awareness, greater knowledge, greater integration of knowledge into everyday life choices.

Contents of a proposed curriculum

 

This is an interdisciplinary , integrated arts approach which builds on the disciplines of history, writing, art critisism and visual art inquiry to create a process of looking, describing, evaluating and reaching conclusions beyond the limits of the classroom making a link between daily thinking behavior and choice making into life.

  • To develop tools with which to evaluate the environment more clearly.
  • To develop careful looking
  • To realize patterns of influence
  • To see how we are conditioned to see only certain things and believe they are our own ideas
  • To see how we have been conditioned to see through others points of view
  • To understand what mediation and the Gaze are
  • To look at why we see what we see the way we do
  • To look at historical situations or biases that have caused this
  • To learn a process of criticism and aesthetic evalution to use in looking at significant works in art history and our pop visual culture
  • To understand that critical an aesthetic evaluation is useful when looking at visual culture and our daily lives
  • To help students become more careful lookers, thinkers and evaluators
  • To use Pop Culture and Media images in as subject matter brings information of gret relavance to the student into our process of inquiry. They can use the same critical process in their daily lives to become more discriminating consumers and members of society.
