Historical Overview and Resources
Viktor Lowenfeld, author of Creative and Mental Growth (1947), served as a visiting professor at Penn State during the summers of 1945 and 1946. At the end of the second summer, he was asked to organize and head a Department of Art Education. By the year 2000, nearly a half-century after the conferral of the first Penn State doctorate in art education, over 300 D.Eds and Ph.Ds had been awarded. The following links lead to: an overview of the contents of Penn State's collection of specialized resources for those interested in the history of art education found in Special Collections at the Paterno Library; a paper by Brent Wilson who charts five decades of the Penn State doctoral program; Ken Beittel's reflections on his years as professor at Penn State (1953-1984); dissertation titles and abstracts; and overviews of art education conferences at Penn State.
