The graduate program in art education offers five degrees, three at the master’s level and two at the doctoral level. At the master’s level, degrees include the M.S. in Art Education, the M.Ed. in Art Education, and the dual degree M.S. in Art Education and Women’s Studies. At the doctoral level, the programs offered are the Ph.D. in Art Education and the dual degree Ph.D. in Art Education and Women’s Studies. Students in these programs may specialize in areas such as: 1) philosophy, aesthetics, and criticism applied to art education; 2) the history of art education; 3) artistic development; studio and studio heuristics; 4) gender studies; 5) art museum studies; 6) curriculum theory, development, assessment, and evaluation; 7) supervision and administration of art programs; and 8) arts policy analysis. In addition to these areas, students may explore many other areas of inquiry that now command increasing interest among graduate students and faculty in art education. A common thread that binds together many of our traditional and less traditional offerings is an interest among many of the faculty in the interdisciplinary study of art education. Some of the additional areas that are explored in the Art Education Program at Penn State include interpretation theory, hypertext theory, performance studies, and studies in visual culture.
