Master's Degree Requirements

A minimum of 30 graduate credits is required for the master's degree. Students must take a minimum of 15 credits in art education. Of those, M.Ed. and M.S. candidates are expected to complete the following three-credit core of nine credits:

Art Education 502: Introduction to Research in Art Education
Art Education 505: Foundations of Art Education
Art Education 536: Curriculum Development in Art Education, or Art Education 588: History of Art Education

Additionally, students are expected to enroll in Art Education 590: Colloquium for at least one credit for two semesters.

Students must take additional credits to total a minimum of 15 credits. All master's degree candidates must also complete 6 credits of foundational studies at the 400 level or above in areas such as art history, studio, philosophy, educational theory and policy, educational psychology, psychology, and anthropology. The remaining 9 credits are made up of elective studies.

Additional M.Ed. requirements. For M.Ed. candidates, 12 credits of course work must be at the 500 level or above. In addition to course work, M.Ed. candidates must write a substantial paper or present an exhibition in lieu of a thesis.

Additional M.S. requirements. For M.S. candidates, 18 credits of course work must be at the 500 level or above. M.S. candidates must prepare and orally defend a thesis. Requirements include 6 credits of thesis research within the 30 credits.

If major field of study is in Education, a minimum of 6 credits are required outside of Education. If major field of study is outside of Education, a minimum of 6 credits are required in Education. No more than 10 graduate credits earned in Continuing Education may be applied toward the M.Ed. and M.S. degrees.

1. Activate your intent to graduate, pay your thesis fee, etc.

(check Graduate Bulletin for deadlines).

2. Order your cap and gown from the HUB.

3. File a signed copy of this form with each of the following:
