DAVID EBITZ, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Art and Art Education

David Ebitz coordinates the undergraduate museums and cultural institutions option in art education, works with graduate students on museum and technology-related research, and teaches large art appreciation surveys. David has a B.A. in art history from Williams College and an A.M. and Ph.D. in fine arts from Harvard University.  He was assistant and associate professor of art at the University of Maine, 1978–1987, where he served as interim director of the University of Maine Art Collection.  From 1987 to 1992, David was head of the Department of Education and Academic Affairs at the J. Paul Getty Museum, a period when the Getty assumed a leadership role in museum education. From 1992 until 2000, David was director of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, where he oversaw a $15 million restoration of the museum’s historic mansion and supervised a complete reinstallation of the museum’s galleries. David's research interests have included medieval secular arts, art historiography and criticism, and art and museum education, on which he has published and given numerous lectures and workshops.  He has curated exhibitions on prints, photography, decorative arts, and American art.  His current research is on museum policy and the education of museum educators, on assessment in art appreciation courses, and on the use of digital technology and the Web in teaching.
